Several Boards and Commissions whose principal interests are regulating development, zoning enforcement, comprehensive planning, open space acquisition and conservation are centralized within the Planning Department. The following is a listing of such entities.
Planning Commission
The Planning Commission reviews and approves residential, commercial and industrial subdivisions and land development projects and conducts periodic reviews of the Comprehensive Community Plan and other documents related to the quantity and quality of development in the Town of Coventry.

Zoning Board of Review
The Zoning Board hears and approves applications for variances, special use permits and appeals relating to the use of land and structures as defined by the Zoning Ordinance.

Conservation Commission
The Conservation Commission provides information, studies, advisory opinions and recommendations to other Town Boards and Commissions on conservation matters related to proposed development projects and preservation of natural resources in the Town of Coventry. The Commission engages in other projects and research that promote the conservation goals of the Town relative to development, utilization or preservation of open areas, woodlands, wetlands and associated areas.

Land Trust
The Land Trust was created pursuant to State Law by the Coventry Town Council to promote preservation of the Town’s natural resources, as well as its rural and historic character for future generations. The Coventry Land Trust protects open space through acquisition of development rights, conservation easements, acquiring title, and receiving donations of real property. The Land Trust works in partnership with other land protection organizations, private, non-profit, and governmental, to find and preserve these lands. Once acquired, the Land Trust manages properties for long term use and preservation.

Town Engineer
The Town Engineer provides professional engineering services for all departments of the Town. His office is located in the Planning Department. The Town Engineer works closely with the Planning Department, Building Official and Public Works Department. He reviews all land development plans and makes recommendations respecting drainage improvements, low impact design methods, traffic and safety control measures. The Town Engineer is actively involved in road construction, stormwater control and sewer extension projects.
